A total of 6509000 tons of cargoes have passed through
the quays of the Port of Varna during 2002. In the century-old history
of the port this can be compared only with the result in 1985, when 6.8 million tons were handled, but in the conditions of socialist-governed economic.
In 2001 5825000 tons were handled. The common turnover increase in 2002 is with 684000 tons, that is to say around 12 %.
Exported grain has the greatest share in this turnover - 1.2 million tons (wheat, maize, sunflower, barley and rice). In comparison, during 2001 the quantity is 420 000 tons.
A higher development report on containers (59061 TEU, +31%), inert
materials (+47%), sugar (+30%) and liquid chemicals (+75%). The biggest
drop there is in the cargoes related to the production of plants in
Devnya town (ore –15%, cement – 16%, soda in bags and pallets – 43%,
liquid fertilizers – 85%).
